BT Digital Voice: Is it Actually Value for Money?
Did you know the average UK household could save over £173* a year by switching from bundled services to standalone digital voice providers? If you’re considering BT Digital Voice, read this before you commit.
When BT announced its move to digital voice, many were left scratching their heads. Questioning, is it truly worth the switch? As BT transitions its landline users to this new system, it’s time to evaluate whether BT Digital Voice offers value for money.
If you’re with BT or thinking about switching, shopping around could save you a fortune. Let’s dive into the costs, features, and alternatives so you can make an informed choice.

BT digital voice: Are they treating it as an afterthought?
BT digital voice is part of BT’s big plan to move from old-school copper landlines to modern internet-based phone technology. However, looking online, it often feels like an afterthought. On BT’s website, digital voice services are bundled with broadband and TV deals, with little emphasis on its unique benefits. This begs the question: Is BT’s digital voice service just a supporting act for their broadband packages? It also leaves us wondering: is digital voice from BT really worth it, or is it just there to make their bundles look better?
Breaking down the costs
Let’s look at the numbers. BT’s cheapest broadband package, BT Fibre Essentials, costs £33.99 a month. It comes with basic digital voice features like nuisance call blocking and caller ID. But here’s the catch: you’ll pay 20.9p per minute for calls to UK landlines and mobiles.
Upgrading to BT unlimited call package at £46.40 a month doesn’t improve phone services, just gives you 1000 minutes of call time per month. You cannot customise or enhance your calling features. BT’s focus seems firmly on broadband and TV rather than delivering exceptional phone service, which is the foundation of their reputation.

Saving money by splitting your services
Here’s a money-saving tip: buy your broadband and digital voice services separately. Many people think bundles are always cheaper, but that’s not necessarily true.
For example, Phonely specialises in home digital landline services with plans starting at just £9.97 a month. For just under £10 you get 1200 minutes to UK landlines and 1200 minutes to UK mobiles, and unrivalled real-time auto call blocking. And for still much less than BT’s premium bundles, you can upgrade to Phonely’s CallGuard plan (with unlimited calls) to have peace of mind with stronger protection against scam calls. Pair Phonely’s standard service with a broadband provider like Zen Internet (£29.99/month) or Plusnet (£21.99/month) and you still get significant savings compared to BT’s bundles when you consider BT’s calling charges.

Why is BT digital voice playing second fiddle?
BT’s main focus is on broadband and TV – that’s where they make the most profit. Digital voice appears secondary, offered as an obligatory alternative to the retiring PSTN copper network.
Despite announcing this transition in 2017, and then pushing the deadline from 2025 to 2027, BT hasn’t actively promoted digital voice, leaving many customers unaware or unimpressed.
With limited features, higher costs, and less flexibility, BT Digital Voice doesn’t measure up to specialised providers like Phonely, which prioritises user satisfaction, safety and innovation.
